Giorgos Pol. Ioannidis: The Evolution of an Inner Visual Language

A curatorial reflection by Daniela Cinalli Rossi on the symbolic, sensory and structural journey of Ioannidis’ painting.

It has been a profound experience to engage with his work.

The Postscript of Glory (1995)

From my curatorial perspective, I perceive a very clear development in his visual language, almost like an inner journey unfolding through distinct stages.

The Human Figure and Symbolic Presence

At first, I encounter a strong presence of the human figure, immersed in an intense, almost dramatic atmosphere. The works appear as scenes rich in symbolism, where the body is not merely representation but an emotional and spiritual territory. There is an implicit narrative that resonates with existential themes, supported by a solid pictorial construction and a remarkable command of the human form.

Bacchus (1991)
Oil on linen, 117 × 146 cm

The body is not merely representation, but an emotional and spiritual territory.

Toward an Essential Dimension

Then, I perceive a shift toward a more essential dimension. The figure begins to dissolve, and the focus moves toward color, materiality, and what lies beneath the surface of the work. It is no longer about what is seen, but what is perceived. In this stage, the painting acquires a more introspective quality, inviting the viewer into a more sensory and less narrative experience.

The Tree of Prison (1997)
Oil on linen, 115 × 148 cm

It is no longer about what is seen, but what is perceived.

Geometry, Structure, Inner Order

Finally, I observe a synthesis in which geometry and planes of color take on a central role. Here, the work seems to reach a more refined structure, where the language becomes more universal. Composition, balance, and the use of color generate a new form of meaning, moving away from representation toward a more conceptual and essential construction.

The Final Apologia (1994)
Oil on linen, 150 × 105 cm, Private collection

Color, balance, and structure attain a universal voice.

Composition, balance, and the use of color generate a new form of meaning.

Rhapsody C (2009)
Oil on linen, 91 × 101 cm, Artist’s personal collection

Each stage does not negate the previous one, but contains and transforms what came before.

In Ioannidis, evolution is not rupture but revelation.
